How To Pretend You’re Maintaining Any Semblance of Sanity During an Injury

Here’s my five-step program to coping with an injury.

1. Make sure you look at Instagram incessantly to see all your friends out running and enjoying themselves. Bonus points if you get to do this on Marathon Monday.

2. Drink copious amounts of wine.

3. …and eat copious amounts of junk food.

4. Get irrationally angry at anyone and everyone around you for walking like a normal human being.

5. Watch TV. A LOT.

Needless to say, I’m handling this setback like a champion! Hope this helps all you other injured runners out there.

  1. I absolutely agree with all of the above. I tripped and broke a bone in my knee. Waiting for it to heal was the worst! It’s so stupid, but it panicked me that my fitness was slipping away and there was nothing I could do about it.

Hopefully you’ll be back on your feet soon and until then, focus your energy on 2 and 3 and remind yourself that in reality, a few weeks out will have no impact on your success.

    • I’m hoping walking happens next week! Ha! And then running in another couple. It’s been feeling better but it’s a real doozy! Hoping the longer I stay off it, the faster it’ll heal!
