Friday Things!

Happiest of Fridays! Any fun weekend plans? In about 3.5 hours, I’ll be getting my wisdom teeth removed from my head, so my plans are to relax, relax, and do some relaxing (and maybe some homework…womp womp). I’m heading into work for a few hours this morning, and I’m actually really happy about this. It will be good to have a distraction from the fact that I can’t eat or drink anything. It’s seriously the worst news to tell a runner that loves her morning coffee and peanut butter toast more than any other meal of the day. I almost considered not being put under, just so I could eat my breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day, after all.

I already apologized for being the Grumpy McGrumperson I’m going to be at work today.

Here’s what I found on the internet this week!

I really related to this. I’m not a creative by any means, but I loved the underlying message of this article. “There is no magical, perfect version of you waiting in the future. You are here. This is all you have. Live exactly the way you want to live, starting right now.”

I’m absolutely guilty of being connected too much. I’ve read a lot of articles on the importance of unplugging, but this one is by far the one that resonated most with me. It’s made all the more poignant, since Scott Dinsmore lost his life while climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. Let’s all unplug a little more and vow to spend more time connecting with the people we’re with, and not on Instagram. (Manfriend, I promise to do this more often!)

This is literally my worst nightmare.

Are you sick of Boston talk yet? Sorry. This absolutely blows my mind. Only 5,000 spots?! The goal is to be able to register during the first week next year.

I love Andi’s blog, I loved her book. I loved her Ted Talk. She did this podcast a few weeks ago and I loved it too. The way she speaks about being healthy and loving yourself is something I can relate to and appreciate that she talks so candidly about it. If you’ve got an hour to spare, I highly recommend listening to it.

Pretty sure this was a Bones episode.

I think this is absolutely fascinating. Jeff recently got a Surface Tablet for work, and he’s been playing solitare on the touch screen. It’s crazy to think how far technology has come in 20 years.

I’m no beer connoisseur (don’t ask me to describe any undertones), but just a FYI for those of you that are. I’ll continue drinking my beers in whatever glasses I’m handed.

I may not be able to get a job with my history degree, but this is exactly why it’s important to have some background knowledge oh historical events. I mean, geezus.

This made my elementary school self SO happy. I remember watching All That and loving Kenan and Kel. “Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger….”

Have a fab weekend everyone!

Friday Things

Happy Friday! Has this week felt insanely long to anybody else? I could not be happier that it is the weekend if I tried! And I’m getting so pumped for the race tomorrow! I’ve run a handful of times this week, very easy, short miles and my legs feel good. I’m ready to give it my all tomorrow and charge up that mountain!

I accidentally published a non-finished version of this post yesterday afternoon again. Damn those dang “Publish” and “Save Draft” buttons so close together. I didn’t even notice it until Jamie commented! Ha! She got a nice little preview of things.

This morning I have a consultation with an oral surgeon to get my wisdom teeth removed. Womp womp. I’m nervous about what it’ll entail/recovery time, since I have another race in three weeks. Hopefully, since they’re already peeking through, they’ll be easy to remove, and I’ll be on my way.

Not too many links this week. The internet didn’t seem to be as great as last week. But, here are the articles I found interesting enough to pass along!

How to Cope With an Injury. We’ve all been there. We’ll all be there again. These are good things to keep in mind.

Why Goal Setting Is the Hardest Part of Running. Staring into the face of another marathon cycle, this time with school and work has me shaking in my running shoes a little bit.

I Pole Vaulted in High School. This was always a serious fear in the back of my head. So sad.

I’m actually a little disappointed Alex Trebek has no sense of humor. I want to high five this lady.

I liked this list. Especially number 3. Whenever someone asks me if J is a runner and I say no they always try to justify why it’s ok. It doesn’t need justification. He doesn’t like to run. I don’t like to work on cars. We love each other anyway.

I always end up eating french fries. Apparently, I should be eating fried chicken.

Have a happy weekend everyone! Good luck to all of you racing this weekend and happy long runs to those who are training!

Friday Things

Hello everyone! Happy Friday to all! I feel like even though this was a short week, it took forever to get here, and of course the weekend will fly by too quickly! I’ve got one last long-ish run this weekend (8 miles) before the half next Saturday and plans to do some mega laundry. How is it that vacation always creates MORE laundry?

I’m doing things a bit differently this Friday. I bring to you a roundup of my favorite stuff from the interwebs this week:

Jenny Scherer talks about her struggle with anorexia and how it almost ruined her running career. It’s a great read about something that a lot of female runners struggle with–maybe not to this degree, but I’m sure guilty of the thought “If I weigh less, I’ll run faster”. This is a critical reminder that taking care of your body–no matter the shape and size–is most important.

There’s a Hogwarts Running Club!!!!! Thinking about joining when registration opens back up.

This couple made their own Drunk History for their wedding, and it is absolutely hilarious.

Yikes. Two Harry Potter things in one post. Sorry about that, guys. For those of you who love the series like me, did you see J.K. Rowling’s announcement that we’ve all been pronouncing “Voldermort” wrong for 18 years? I’m sorry, J.K., but what’s the point of coming out and saying that? Just let us interpret/have our memories of the series and leave it alone. Voldermort will always have that “T” on the end for me.

My calves are notoriously the most troublesome spot for me as mileage increases. Runner’s World has a stellar article on how to treat your calves to some TLC.

Any fellow history buffs out there? I’ve heard and read a ton on hiding Jews in various countries throughout World War II, and even some in rural Germany, but never thought about what it would be like in the heart of Berlin. This excerpt from a new book has me hooked. I plan on purchasing and starting it this weekend.

Anyone else get through Bachelor In Paradise? While I thought last season was waaaay better than this one, this Betch review on the finale had me in tears from laughing. #truth

Girls respond to failure differently than boys. Embracing mistakes and “failures” has helped me to make wiser and better choices for myself overall–but, they were never easy to do. This made me think.

Have a fantastic weekend everyone!

Friday Things

Happy Friday everyone!

Jeff and I are currently on our way to Colorado for the long weekend and I’m so pumped! I’ve had it in my head that I will love Colorado for about 6 years now, and I’m finally going to get to experience it’s glory!

(Also, I’m writing this in the car on my phone. So apologies for any typos, formatting weirdness and the like.)

-It’s been an insanely busy and hectic month! As looney as I felt for most of August, I’m sad to see it go. It’s headlamp season again for morning runs (blegh) and so chilly in the mornings! Long sleeves are being donned and rumors of a particularly nasty winter headed our way already has me missing summer days. While others are embracing pumpkin-flavored everything, I’m holding tightly onto the last bits of grilling and patio weather we’ll have for a while!

-I’ve started school! Bio 181 is in full swing and it feels SO weird to be back in a classroom. Particularly in a 100 level class. I haven’t taken anything biology related since I was a sophomore in high school, so I really feel like I’m starting from zero. But, after two lectures, I am happy to report I find it a heck of a lot more interesting than 15 year old me.

-I kind of can’t believe I have a half marathon to run in 2 weeks. I plan on a 12 miler tomorrow morning, the first I’ve managed to get in this training cycle. While I don’t have any real goals for this race, I would like to have a good race. I’d prefer to run strong and well, I’m also really trying not to burn myself out. I’m acutely aware of the fact that I have races and goals to train for until February and that still seems like a long way away!

-I’ve found myself transitioning to road running lately and it makes me happy and sad. It’s too dark in the mornings to venture onto the trails anymore, so my week day runs are currently on the roads. I’m getting some of my speed back, which is fun, but at the same time, I’ll be sad to say goodbye to these gorgeous views.

-We’ll be in the Denver/Boulder area this weekend. Send me your recommendations for things to see, places to eat, and beer to drink.

Have a happy long weekend everyone! Enjoy the last bit of summer lovin!

Friday Things

I was about to ask if anyone else was excited it’s Friday, but DUH. It’s Friday. I can’t imagine a single person in the world who is like “Ew. Friday.”

Thanks everyone for your comments on yesterday’s post! It’s always good to know you’re not the only one feeling a certain way! I’m sure my motivation is hiding somewhere, I’ve just got to find it! I have plans for a long run this weekend on a trail I’ve been dying to try for weeks (seriously. And every weekend seems to have something go wrong, so I’m stoked to have the opportunity to try it this weekend!). I’m hoping some alone time on a pretty trail is just the medicine I’ll need!

Anyways, let’s get to our Friday Things.

1. I finally just started listening to the podcast Undisclosed. If you were a reader back when Serial was first coming out, you may remember my obsession with it. Once it ended, I wanted more information and heard about Undisclosed coming out, but I never tried listening to it! Weird, I know. My friend told me to give it a shot and I’m so glad I did. If you enjoyed Serial and are curious about the Adnan Sayed case, I recommend giving it a listen. I had SO many unanswered questions after Serial ended, and Undisclosed is doing it’s best to answer them. I’m only two episodes in and all I can think is “How did this case get SO royally effed up?” I truly hope I’m never involved in a crime, because after this, I’m terrified of the way investigations go!

Maybe Bones and Booth will be on my case, and then for sure the real perpetrator will be caught….Anyways..

2. I read this article about Ice Baths from Runner’s World and found it extremely interesting. I’m a huge proponent of the ice bath. Any long run 14+ miles, I ice bath when I get home. It’s an interesting read!

3. Have you ever brewed your own Kombucha? After reading Tracy’s post about it, I feel like it’s something I may want to try. I love Kombucha but man! $4 a bottle adds up quick. I usually buy one for myself as a treat on the weekends. It’d be nice to have a stock in my fridge.

4. Have you read this article? I remember reading it about six months ago when it first made the rounds on Facebook, but I came across it again yesterday and re-read it. Kindness, people. Not just in your romantic relationship, but in all your relationships. Can you imagine what the world would be if we were all a little more kind to each other? There’s your food for thought this Friday. 😉

5. I’m seriously craving some time by some water. I wish it was the beach (we had a beach day planned for while we were in Houston, but unfortunately due to the tropical storms that water was bacteria loaded so that got scratched), but I’ll settle for a lake or the creek. J and I have been talking about taking a day trip, so hopefully we’ll make that happen soon!

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

Friday Things

Happy Friday! I had a Friday post all written up and ready to go and then WordPress went and deleted it!

So, let me try this again.

1. Thanks for the support and excitement on my last post! I am even more excited now after reading everyone’s supportive comments. While, I’m not super stoked about the idea of training for nine straight months (it actually kind of scares me), I am excited about getting that 3:30 I so desperately want! I also plan on taking it pretty easy in terms of training for the Flag Half and Soulstice Trail Run. I’m primarily going to focus on distance and hill work, and then I’ll start introducing some speed work back into regular rotation mid-September.

2. I haven’t run much in the last two weeks. I wanted to take it easy after my races, and then I got sick, and then my friend was in town, and then I figured out my training schedule and I was like “woah okay, I’m gonna take it easy right now”. So, I’m rolling with it for now. My ankle has also been acting up, so I’m trying to let that rest a bit.

3. Speaking of running, we’re heading to Houston soon to visit friends and family and I’m getting worried about running in that heat and humidity! Humidity-familiar friends. How do you do it! Give me your tips and tricks. Is it better to get up early and run in the am, or wait and run in the evenings?

Unfortunately, I can’t remember anything else I talked about this morning prior to the deletion of my first post. So, that’s all I’m going with this time!

Hope everyone has a great weekend! We’re going to see John Butler Trio tomorrow, and I plan on running a nice long trail run, but other than that, plan on taking it easy. Hope everyone stays cool!

Friday Things

Hello! Happy Friday! I’m going to dive right in with some Friday Things….

1.I want to tell you all about how great running is going, but I’m going to save that for a real Training Log post (!!!!!!) on Monday. I don’t even know how long it’s been since I did one of those, and I am probably a little too excited for it.

2. We FINALLY have some summer weather! This whole week it’s been in the 70s and this weekend we’re supposed to finally hit 80. We’ve got a BBQ planned this weekend and I’ve got some pool hanging scheduled with a dear friend. I even turned the heat  OFF in our house this morning. (Yes, we’ve had the heat on this whole time…it’s been cold).

3. When my alarm went off this morning, I was having a very vivid dream where I had ordered a drink at Starbucks (a latte too…not anything complicated) and the barista had no idea how to make it. So, after arguing with her for a while, I was walking her through it. It was very, very weird and I woke up desperately needing coffee. Random, no?

4. I’m a tad worried about running this race in 2 weeks. I hope to run 5 miles tomorrow and maybe 6 or 7 next weekend to hopefully be ready to go the weekend after that….I keep telling myself I’ll be fine. I wasn’t going to really run this race for time anyway, so who cares if I need to walk a bit? The other thing I’m worried about? The race is on the trail I was on when I sprained my ankle. I’m excited to use it as redemption, but I’m also kind of afraid of it happening again. That would be the pits.

5. The flooding going on in Texas and Oklahoma is absolutely blowing my mind. J’s from Houston originally, so he’s been checking in on family and friends all week. I’ve never seen flooding like that and legitimately cannot wrap my head around it. I hope all of you from the areas are staying safe and dry! I saw another storm is headed your way. Scary!

6. Has anyone been keeping up with the news headlines surrounding this season of the Bachelorette? (I realize how ridiculous that sounds with all the flooding and tragedy occurring in Oklahoma and Texas right now, but everyone we know in Houston is safe and I need light, funny things to offset all the tragedy in the news). First, we had coitus confirmation in the preview of “What’s to Come this Season”. THEN this. I’m wondering if it’s some sort of weird joke, but regardless, this has been one of the best seasons of the Bachelorette I’ve seen so far…and there’s only been two episodes.

Alright, that’s all I’ve got today friends. I hope you have a fabulous weekend! Log some miles, and enjoy the sunshine. And those of you in Texas and Oklahoma STAY SAFE! See you Monday with a weekly report filled with running! 🙂
